PIRTTI HANDWOVEN FOR WHISPER EDITIONS photo by David Rinella

2015 has been quite a year! I was thrilled to release Valatameri for Whisper Editions. This is a limited edition, unisex scarf exclusively made for this wonderful store located in Manhattan. I made 10 scarves based on my time spent in San Francisco, walking through the fog and cold along the Pacific Ocean.

Serendipity page

This scarf was also featured in the print version of the holiday gift guide for Serendipity Magazine and mentioned on Pixie Warhol as #1 for 6 Great Made in NY Gifts I Would Love to Get. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported this project!

Wishing you all a most wonderful 2016 and beyond!

Warmly,

Anne-Marie

“Pikku” is a Finnish word that translates to “small” in English. If you would like to see a tying tip for this “small” scarf, please have a look at this short Instagram video. Enjoy!

A year ago when we moved to Sleepy Hollow, I thought to myself, wouldn’t it be great to find a local yarn that I could weave with? While living in California, I became inspired by Fibershed and the idea of a “local textile culture.” Being so close to the Hudson Valley, I figured that at some point I could find a local source for yarn. That local source ended up being 5 minutes away from my home at the lovely Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture where they have a flock of Finn-Dorset sheep. The sheep are raised primarily for their meat, but their lovely coats also produce glorious amounts of wool at shearing time and that wool has been spun into yarn.

Using the wool from the Finn-Dorset flock (cream) with other U.S. produced yarn (dyed), I have created a scarflette. There are several different ways to tie it, the trick being that as with my other scarves, the fringe can be tied together! This produces a fantastic drape and a neck warmer that stays securely around your neck.

The scarflette has been made in four different colorways and is currently available in the gift shop at Stone Barns. (Located in Pocantico Hills, NY.) A small number of them will be available in my online store in November.

This is just the beginning of my quest for more sustainable clothing. I have learned so much in the past two years and have so far to go. It’s one of those things where the more you learn, the more you realize what you don’t know. I am absolutely delighted to find many kindred spirits right here in my new home town whom I can learn from and collaborate with. There’s so much more to come…
